The Scots word 'inch', meaning an island (as in Inchcolm) indicates that there was once firm land here surrounded by bog and marsh. In 1396 it was the venue chosen for a clash of arms between men of Clan Chattan and Clan Kay to settle a feud. The incident was immortalised by Scott in his novel 'The Fair Maid of Perth' (1828).
