NS6829 : Old Lime Kiln

Old Lime Kiln
Old Lime Kiln
This old lime kiln lies behind a shed near the edge of the minor road where it is joined by the farm road from Middlefield. The limestone rock was quarried locally and brought here to be turned into quick lime for use by local farmers.
There are no signs of coal mines along this road, but there are several tracks across the Greenock Water valley to Muirkirk (NS6927) where there were coal mines. These probably supplied the fuel for the fires in the kilns.
