“The Duke's Seat” at Cliveden
Standing on his plinth among the trees across the valley from the parterre of the great mansion he rebuilt in 1851-52 is George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland. He was one of a succession of extremely wealthy owners of this grand property of 374 acres which overlooks the Thames
SU9084 : The tree-lined River Thames below Cliveden. The last owners were the Astor family, generous benefactors of many of our national institutions, who were at Cliveden from 1893 until 1942 when they gave it to the National Trust together with a donation of some nine million pounds - at today’s valuation.
