European Pipe Band Championships
For the first time ever, Forres hosted the European Pipe Band Championships in 2013.

The Grant Park was laid out with four competition arenas round the main park, with four tuning arenas nearby. Bands can and do practise anywhere round the unmarked areas of the park, then they march into their tuning arena for a final rehearsal before marching into the relevant competition arena.

There are several different competitions, one each for Grade 1 (the top bands), Grade 2, Grades 3a, 3b, 4a and 4b, and for juvenile, junior and novice bands and a separate competition for drum majors. There was also a Highland dancing competition. There are four judges for each band competition; two piping judges, one drumming judge and one who judges the ensemble. The judges' placings are added up to arrive at the final result, with the ensemble placing tipping the balance in the event of a tie.

The whole day is planned to the minute. Bands make a selection of tunes from an approved list, longer for Grade 1 and shorter for lower grade bands, and they are each allocated a timed slot of seven or in some cases eight minutes at a specified time.

Once all bands have performed, the arenas are cleared and the bands march into the central area, and once all bands have marched in and formed up, the massed bands all play a short selection together.

Of the 122 participant bands, most came from Scotland. There were several from Ireland, and bands from Belgium, Oman and Australia as well. The programme listed not only the names of the bands and of each band's pipe major, but also which tartan they were wearing, which was very handy for working out which was which!

The 2013 event was extremely well planned and organised, attracting favourable comment from many competitors and spectators. It returned to Forres in 2014 and 2015 but I was unable to attend because I was at Geograph AGMs.
