Northern marsh orchids, Bempton cliffs
The Kew website gives the habitat of these gorgeous flowers as:
"Damp or wet habitats with calcareous, neutral or slightly acid soils, such as marshy fields, road verges, lake margins, fens, marshes, flushes, coastal cliffs, dune slacks, and sometimes peat bogs and open woodland."
The deep purple colour really stands out amongst the clifftop greenery. They flower from mid May to late July and we spotted them in several locations nearby.
