Razorbills, Inner Farne
Razorbills, Inner Farne
Compared to the 25,000 pairs of guillemots to be found on the Farne Islands during the breeding season, there are only in the region of 300-400 pairs of razorbills. Razorbill nest sites are usually hidden from view, but the presence of a colony is clearly indicated by the attendance of off-duty birds standing close by. Since it is not usually possible to count occupied sites, the species is difficult to census. Usually, only a single egg is laid. It is thought to be the closest living relative to the now extinct, Great Auk (Pinguinis impennis).
