Derwent Dam
Derwent Dam
Built between 1914 and 1916 the Derwent Dam is located at the southern end of the Derwent Reservoir in the Peak District.
During the Second World War the reservoir was used by pilots of 617 Squadron (aka “Dambusters”) for training on low-level flying that would be needed for the “Operation Chastise” raid on the German dams. Flypasts of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight are now regularly staged over the reservoir to commemorate the anniversary of that raid on the German dams during World War II (16/17th May 1943).
