The Transporter Bridge
The Wiki entry LinkExternal link says that the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, completed in 1911, is the furthest downstream bridge across the River Tees. It connects the A178 in Middlesbrough, on the south bank, to Port Clarence, on the north bank. It carries a travelling 'car', or 'gondola', suspended from the bridge, across the river in 90 seconds. The gondola can carry 200 people, 9 cars, or 6 cars and one minibus. The bridge is Grade II* listed.

There are only eight other similar surviving transporter bridges in the world LinkExternal link. Two of these are in the UK: The Newport bridge LinkExternal link re-opened on 30 July 2010 after closing completely in 2008 for a £2 million restoration - see ST3186 : Newport Transporter Bridge (photographed by Chris Allen). The Warrington bridge LinkExternal link is currently not in use. It is one of two originally at this site; the other, from 1905, has not survived.
