The New Church near Holycross, Co. Limerick
This church was built in the 15th century by the Earls of Desmond. By 1642 it was listed as a ruin, but in 1679 it was restored by Rachel, Countess of Bath, at which time it became known as the New Church. A belfry was added at this time and the church was used for Protestant worship. In the 19th century it was again a ruin but in 1900 it was repaired for the last time by the Count de Salis. At that point a glazed Madonna and child were added inside. Today, as you can see, it has deteriorated badly and really only a shell remains. When photographed in May 2013, part of the church was not accessible because of safety fears. There is an interesting plaque attached, see:- R6440 : Memorial plaque on the New Church near Holycross, Co. Limerick.
