Icelandic plaque, London Street
An unexpected sign on a house in London Street states:
'The Icelandic National Anthem "Ó, guð vors lands" by the composer Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson and the poet Matthías Jochumsson was written and composed in this house in 1874'
Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson was working as a music teacher and pianist in Edinburgh when he was visited during the winter of 1873-74 by his friend Matthías Jochumsson. Jochumsson persuaded Sveinbjörnsson to set his poem to music and subsequently wrote the second and third verses of the poem in London.
