White Ladies Priory

The Priory of St.Leonard at Brewood was founded towards the end of the 12th century for Augustinian canonesses. Its modest endowments limited numbers to between 5 and 9 in the later Middle Ages and it was dissolved in 1536 shortly after the Act of Supremacy. Much of the buildings were demolished shortly afterwards and the remainder converted to a house in the 16th century. Charles II came here in 1651 following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester, before seeking refuge at nearby Boscobel House. The surviving remains are largely the nave of the 12th century church.
