SK5852 : Papplewick Pumping Station - inside a Galloway boiler

Papplewick Pumping Station - inside a Galloway boiler
Papplewick Pumping Station - inside a Galloway boiler
The Galloway boiler had a cylindrical shell like a Lancashire and had two fire tubes at the front end but, unlike a Lancashire boiler, these joined into a single kidney shaped flue towards the rear of the boiler. This section was traversed by conical 'Galloway tubes' to aid circulation and increase heat transfer surface. This is the view vertically down through a manhole on top of the boiler showing the top surface of the kidney shaped flue and some of its Galloway tubes. Rivets can be seen joining sections of the flue.
