Sunset over the Hope
In the foreground is Cliffe dredger pier, beyond that the Lower Hope (the Thames below Tilbury); and beyond that the sun is going down over Essex.
This final reach of the Thames, before it swings due east along Sea Reach to the open sea, is named on current maps as the 'Lower Hope' - but in earlier centuries it was simply 'the Hope'. That was the name Samuel Pepys knew it by - and he knew the lower Thames very well.
For a good many years dredged material has been pumped ashore here, and deposited in the Cliffe pools area: Link
