Inverkip Street Burial Ground
Inverkip Street Burial Ground
This is a general view of the north-western corner of the burial ground, showing a variety of memorials: mural tablets, low lair markers, a squat obelisk with urn, and some table stones.

As an aside: in the earliest days of this burial ground, none but the flat stones on the ground (and the mural tablets) would have been allowed; the Feu Contract for the burial ground specified that "no head stones were to be erected upon the graves or burying-places, but only gravestones laid close upon the surface without any support, or any other thing erected upon the burying-places so as to interrupt the free passage to the ground".

A pinkish stone visible on the wall, near the centre of the picture, is a NS2776 : Memorial to William Wilson. Nearer, the obelisk with urn marks "the family grave of Duncan Campbell, Master Mariner" (d. 1834 aged 64). The table stone nearest it is for "Walter Malcolm, Senior Cooper".
Inverkip Street Burial Ground

This burial ground opened in 1787; the existing one at the Old West Kirk had, by then, proved too small for Greenock's growing population. See a Geograph article Link for a more detailed history. For all of the inscriptions, see "Renfrewshire MI pre-1855" (vol 1). The adjacent Duncan Street Burial Ground Link was created in 1816. These grounds were closed up in 1859, having been superseded by Greenock Cemetery: Link
The Inverkip Street Burial Ground is discussed in the last few pages of LinkExternal link (PDF).
