Flodden Memorial, Selkirk
The bronze Fletcher Memorial by renowned Borders sculptor Thomas J Clapperton was commissioned in 1913, the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden. As I write we are on the eve of the statue's centenary, only a few weeks from the 500th anniversary of the dreadful bloodshed.
H.V.Morton [In Scotland Again, 1933] declared the simple three word sentence inscribed on the plinth - O FLODDEN FIELD - to be the most eloquent and poignant on any war memorial in his ken.
