Upper Boat Pond, Beaufort
Upper Boat Pond, Beaufort
A Local Nature Reserve that is an upland site situated to the north of the village of Beaufort and the town of Brynmawr. The Northern edge is bounded by the A465 Heads of the Valleys road.

The site contains a variety of habitats including Mynydd Llangattock Common, Beaufort Community Woodland, two former reservoirs, a quarry and spoil tips. Much of the area was greatly transformed in the 18th and 19th centuries by the iron and coal industries and some of it subsequently levelled and re-landscaped in the 1960s during the construction of the A465.

The reservoirs, now referred to as Upper and Lower Boat Ponds, were built for the supply of Nantyglo Ironworks which was constructed in 1780. They were later used to supply the Ebbw Vale Steelworks until 1937 when a new larger reservoir was constructed nearby.
