Finsbury: Twin towers at The Angel, Islington
On the left is The Angel, Islington, on the right the campanile-type tower of the former Angel Cinema.
The current building at The Angel site on the left was built as a public house and a hotel in 1903, replacing the former Angel Inn. It was built with its variegated orange terracotta on the upper floors for the brewers Truman, Hanbury, Buxton and Co. Currently occipied by the Co-operative Bank, the ground floor was a Lyons Corner House between 1921 and 1960. It is a Grade II Listed Building.
The Angel Cinema was built in 1913 with the 1,463 seat auditorium and main foyer entrance on White Lion Street. Only the grand entrance to the circle seats was from Islington High Street on this side and under the tower. The auditorium of the cinema was demolished around 1973, leaving only the Grade II Listed tower on the right, which is now sadly besmirched with graffiti.
