Discussion on NY0703
the viking cross, i believe, is that of shelagh of eskdale, a viking princess who settled here, married a poor man, and was a christian. the man was of the old religion, and she converted him just before his death. he also had a cross, which is believed to be built into the church, and the bottom part now a sundial. i am yet to go and see for myself. he became king of cumberland, and fought the army of the king of england. this all happened around 1000 ad. to read in more detail, look for the book shelagh of eskdale ( or the stone of shame) , by Nicholas Size. i dont know if its true or not, but it proved to be interesting reading, especially for this church.
