Sailing barge 'Lady Daphne' going about off Shellness
Photo taken from the foreshore close to Shellness hamlet.
The old vessel had been making to windward at the mouth of the Swale, against a stiff south-westerly breeze. Her skipper has brought her close inshore, on port tack, and she's now turning in a few feet of water, and her foresail crumples - for a moment - as she comes round head-to-wind.
'Lady Daphne' was competing in the Swale Barge Match. For a few hours the Swale and Whitstable Bay were teeming with the red-brown sails of old working craft - giving at least an inkling of the coastal scene as it must have been a century or two ago.
