East Bergholt, The Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin in East Bergholt was begun around 1350 and was largely complete two hundred years later. The Church is well known for the absence of a tower or spire to house the bells. Work began on a tower in 1525, but construction was halted in 1530 and the tower was never built.
This archway, at the base of the (incomplete) tower allows worshippers to process around the church without leaving consecrated ground. It is sometimes referred to as a "Galilee", as a reminder of how Christ led his disciples into Galilee after his resurrection.
The church is a Grade I listed building (
Link British listed buildings)
