Flint Castle (1)
Flint Castle was the first of a series of castles in North Wales built by Edward I in order to subjugate the Welsh. Building commenced in 1277, and was substantially completed by 1286, when work ceased. It consisted of an outer bailey and an inner ward, with three corner towers and a large detached stone keep. It was separated from the outer bailey by a tidal moat connected via a gatehouse and drawbridge. Sited on the western shore of the Dee estuary, it was easily supplied by river or sea, or by land from Chester.
