Along with three memorial seats, the Abbey Gardens also houses the Rose Garden with its memorial pillar dedicated to the 94th Bombardment Group (TL8564 : USAAF War Memorial, Abbey Gardens).

During World War II, Suffolk's flat fields were ideal for Airfields, and 19 were eventually built, used mostly by the USAAF. This influx of troops was so great that by 1944, 1 in every 7 people living in Suffolk was an American, one of whom was John T Appleby LinkExternal link who served in the US Army Air Force during the final months of World War II. Appleby's book "Suffolk Summer" was published in 1948. The author gave the copyright to the Borough Council of Bury St Edmunds with the condition that all royalties would be used to maintain the Old English Rose Garden in the Abbey Gardens as a permanent memorial to those American servicemen who gave their lives in the cause of freedom.
