Iffley, Oxford
St Mary's is described as a church that has remained almost unchanged from the time that it was built. Although there are many English churches constructed in this tall narrow style, most tend to have been widened by the subsequent addition of aisles and transepts. In this one, only a chancel has been added, plus its windows have been altered. This one is in late Romanesque style with massive walls, high arches and rich carving. The lord of the manor, Robert de Saint Remy, seems likely to have been responsible for its construction in about 1170. Robert de Saint Remy's family came from north-west Normandy and had arrived in England by 1155. The church is Grade I-listed.
