Memorial to Walter Washington Buchanan
Memorial to Walter Washington Buchanan
"In memory of Walter Washington Buchanan M.D., born at Hanover, State of Jersey, U.S., June 4, 1777. Died at Greenock, September 11, 1861. Also of his son James Campbell Buchanan, merchant, Greenock, born at New York, March 3rd, 1803, died at Greenock 10th October 1863."

As a youngster, Walter Washington Buchanan, who was the third son of Walter Buchanan, was a playmate of George Washington Parke Custis, the step-grandson of General (and later President) George Washington. It is said that the General would send an elegant horse-drawn carriage to collect him. Young Walter was later sent to Scotland to be educated (his father had been born in Scotland); he graduated M.D. from Glasgow University in 1798.

For a more detailed biography, see pages 376-7 of volume 1 of the "Biographical register of Saint Andrew's society of the state of New York" (William M MacBean, LL.D.; 1922). For his father, Walter Buchanan, see page 98 of the same work.

Walter Washington Buchanan died at his villa, Bagatelle, in Greenock (see NS2677 : Houses on the Esplanade for a distant view). The site where he and his son are buried is marked by this sarcophagus in Greenock Cemetery, but his wife, Annabella Brownlie, was interred in the Old West Kirk burial ground.
