Hillfoot railway station

Hillfoot is the penultimate stop on the line to Milngavie which was opened by the Glasgow and Milngavie Junction Railway Company in 1863. Hillfoot was opened by the North British Railway Company (which absorbed the G&MJRC in 1873) when the track was doubled in 1900.

Today the line is electrified and there are four services per hour to Glasgow and to Milngavie.

In the 1930s Hillfoot was the southern terminus of an experimental "railplane" line LinkExternal link which Glasgow inventor George Bennie hoped would revolutionise inter-city transport.

Here is a LinkExternal link to a short British Pathe film which shows the railplane in use.
