NS5063 : Mackenzie Fountain

Mackenzie Fountain
Mackenzie Fountain
As recorded on the top of the structure, the fountain was "presented by Archibald Mackenzie Esq. of Milliken to the Corporation of Paisley for Hawkhead Cemetery July 1891", only a few months after the cemetery opened. I do not know of any official name for the fountain, but the "Archibald Mackenzie Memorial Fountain" would be a reasonable description of it.

The fountain does not appear to bear a manufacturer's name, but the NS6063 : Bailie James Martin Memorial Drinking Fountain, Glasgow Green, is very similar to this one, and is the work of Walter MacFarlane & Co, of the Saracen Foundry.

Archibald Mackenzie was Provost of Paisley from 1894 to 1900. Another of his gifts to the Burgh was the Royal Victoria Eye Infirmary, paid for by him as a Jubilee offering (specifically, for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee).
Mackenzie Fountain
This cast-iron fountain occupies a central location in Hawkhead Cemetery LinkExternal link and was presented by Archiband Mackenzie of Milliken in 1891. It does not appear to bear the name of the manufacturer, but it is probably by Walter MacFarlane & Co, of the Saracen Foundry, who produced almost identical work.
Hawkhead Cemetery
The cemetery is operated by Renfrewshire Council. It opened in April 1891. Within its grounds are a war memorial, a memorial garden, and a monument commemorating the seventy-one children who lost their lives in the Glen Cinema Disaster of 1929.
