Part of the Green Stop Line erected in 1940 to slow down a German invasion. There are approximately 35 such pillboxes along the Brue between Westhay and Highbridge/Burnham on the coast. They were placed on waterways where possible - an ideal tank obstacle. They look South, assuming an invasion would come up from the South coast in Devon or Dorset aimed at Bristol and Bath. There is one each side of Westhay Bridge.
Fortunately, they were never put to the test.
LinkExternal link shows those still in existence.
Eastwards the line stretched right across to Surrey and Kent.
