All Souls' College was founded in 1438 by Henry VI and Henry Chichele (a fellow of New College and Archbishop of Canterbury). Beyond it, and separated by an entrance to Catte Street, is the University Church of St Mary the Virgin (a.k.a. St Mary's), the largest of Oxford's parish churches. The oldest part of the present church is the tower (c.1270) and the spire, with its triple-gabled outer pinnacles, inner pinnacles, gargoyles and statues, was added in the 1320s. St Mary’s was the site of the 1555 trial of the Oxford Martyrs, when the bishops Latimer and Ridley and Archbishop Cranmer were tried for heresy and later burnt at the stake outside the city walls. Until the C17th the church was also used for increasingly rowdy graduation and degree ceremonies. However, after the English Civil War (1651) Christopher Wren designed what became the Sheldonian Theatre and thereafter the church was used purely for religious purposes. This road is the A420.
