Spilsby: marketplace and memorial to Sir John Franklin
Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) led four expeditions into the Arctic and died in the course of the fourth, along with all members of his crew. He was a native of Spilsby and is proudly remembered in the town. The memorial carries a quotation from his fellow-Lincolnshireman Alfred Lord Tennyson (whose wife was Franklin's niece).
