TQ6746 : Level crossing keeper's cottage on Wagon Lane
taken 11 years ago, near to Beltring, Kent, England
Level crossing keeper's cottage on Wagon Lane
The Medway Valley Line was built in two stages by the South Eastern Railway. The first stage, opened on 25th September 1844, was from Paddock Wood following the Medway Valley to Maidstone. In 1856 the line was extended up the Medway Valley to the North Kent Line at Strood (which had opened in 1847).
This is the earlier section between Beltring (which station did not open until 1909) and Paddock Wood. The attractive crossing keeper's cottage is now a private residence and the notice on the gate says not to bother them if there are problems with the crossing.
