On the Askern Junction to Knottingley line of the former Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway opened in 1848. Regular passenger services ceased in 1947 though the line is regularly used as a diversionary route and since May 2010 by Grand Central trains between London Kings Cross. Freight traffic is still heavy.
