Castle Grove near Bruces Castle Farm
A view from Crease Road. Behind Bruce's Castle Farm is the woodland of Castle Grove covering the site and moat of Bruce's Castle. The manor house of the Bruses stood within the moated inclosure now called 'Bruce's Castle Moat,' and was built by Bernard de Brus soon after 1242. The house was probably of timber, and seems to have lasted until 1576, by which time it was probably ruinous. It was abandoned by 1600. The farmhouse was built outside the west side of the moat, and called Bruce's Castle Farm. (Ian Yarham)
