NO7255 : Usan House David Scott, a highly-revered Commissioner of Assam in the days of the Raj, hailed from here. A biography of him was published in Delhi (Nirode K. Barooah b1937. David Scott In North-East India, 1802-1831. Munshiram Manoharlal, New Delhi, 1970). He is credited with the discovery of the native Indian tea plant. I deposited a copy with the Montrose Museum, where there is also a detailed family tree for the Scott's of Usan. There is also a monument to David Scott at Cherrapunji (yes, the wettest place on earth) in Meghalaya state, close to the Bangladeshi border. Perhaps Montrose too ought to consider honouring his memory in some way.
