St Oswald's Church with its 212ft high spire – crowned with a cockerel – is seen here looking northeast. The present church was begun about 1160 and consecrated in 1241. Building continued on the transepts and nave until 1280; the south aisle and spire were completed between 1300-50 and the nave clerestory was added in 1520. Only In the 1870s was a high-pitched lead roof added to the north transept. The town centre is reached via Church Street, situated to its left.
