Church hall, Headless Cross Methodist Church, from The Rough, Redditch
"On the whole, despite the overcrowding, Headless Cross seems to have been quite a respectable area. Most of the locals seem to have attended church or chapel. The Methodists first worshipped in a private house, 44 Birchfield Road but as early as 1827 they had raised funds to build a small chapel. It was so well-attended that it was rebuilt in 1858 and again in 1873.....During a storm in March 1895 the wind lifted the roof off and the building collapsed. The Methodists worked hard to raise funds and were able to open the present church in 1897. It has an unusual openwork spire, designed to withstand the fiercest storm."

Headless Cross, Redditch
The name first appeared in 1275. The village commanded a long view to the east from the ridge now followed by the Evesham Road. In the early 19th century it grew around the manufacture of needles, springs and fish-hooks. Headless Cross became part of Redditch district in 1875 although most of it was rolling Worcestershire countryside. Being the highest point of Redditch the East Worcestershire Waterworks built a water tower in 1882. It was replaced by the present concrete structure that is a Redditch landmark. The Vaynor estate was built in the 1950s. Headless Cross was absorbed by Redditch new town from the mid-1960s.
