SU6878 : Where the Well Was

Where the Well Was
Where the Well Was
This small triangle in the road is the site of the village well at Tinkers Green.
At one time there was a well house and winding gear here but that has long gone.
The shaft hasn't been filled in though and is still there under a concrete slab, now pretty much overgrown.
For a long time after the well ceased to be used as a water source the Environment Agency and predecessors used it as a groundwater monitoring point.
The water is around 45 - 50 metres below ground.
