The first monastery was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon era King of Northumbria, Oswy as Streoneshalh (the older name for Whitby). He appointed Lady Hilda, abbess of Hartlepool Abbey and niece of Edwin the first Christian king of Northumbria, as founding abbess.
In 867, the Saxon monastery was destroyed by Viking raiders, and was abandoned.
In 1078 the Norman conquerors re-founded the abbey under orders from William de Percy and the current ruins are the remains of the Abbey which was begun around 1220. During the medieval period Whitby was a place of major religious significance, it was one of the earliest and most important centres of Christianity in England.
In December 1539 the monastery was dissolved and destroyed following the Second Suppression Act of Henry VIII. Further damage took place in 1914 when the west front was hit by shells from a German warship.
