St. Cuthbert's Church, Elsdon - cabinet containing the skulls of three horses
See NY9393 : St. Cuthbert's Church, Elsdon. An information board near the cabinet says that the skulls "were discovered inside the spire that surmounts the bell turret during the restoration of 1877. The reason for building the skulls into the turret remains a mystery, but it has been suggested that it may be found in the survival of some old pagan custom in which sacrificing a horse was seen as an act of sanctification".
