NZ0712 : The Old Church, Brignall

taken 11 years ago, near to Brignall, County Durham, England

The Old Church, Brignall
The Old Church, Brignall
The old church and church yard on the banks of the River Greta. It is close to the site of the medieval village of Brignall, which is now just a few bumps in the ground. The old church was probably built in the 13th century, though a fragment of a possible Anglo-Saxon stone cross shows that there was probably an even earlier church here. In the field adjacent to the church ( not in the picture) the remnants of medieval ridge and furrow farming strips can be seen.
