Submarine in the Medway, Rochester
Submarine in the Medway, Rochester
This Russian submarine was built by the Soviet navy in 1967. It was decommissioned in 1994 and has since been used as a museum ship in London and Folkestone. At the time this image was taken, the submarine was languishing in the River Medway at Rochester.

Rochester Castle and Cathedral are both visible in the background.
River Medway
The 70 mile long river starts at Turners Hill, at the West Sussex border, and through Kent to meet the Thames Estuary. It travels through many major towns, including Tonbridge, Maidstone, Strood and Rochester. The river has many locks from Tonbridge to Allington, where the river becomes tidal. Boats can navigate the river up to Tonbridge. At Yalding there is a short diversion along the Hampstead Road Canal, whilst the river goes over sluices and below the Tywford Bridge.
After floods devastated Tonbridge in 1968 a substantial flood barrier was built in 1981 on the Medway at nearby Leigh, to protect the town.

Russian Black Widow Submarine
This used to be a museum 'ship' near Woolwich (near the Flood Barrier) and then it moved to Folkestone for a time, before moving to Strood. Unsure what is happening now to it.
