SD6597 : Ruin, Long Rigg Beck

taken 11 years ago, 3 km from Lowgill, Cumbria, England

Ruin, Long Rigg Beck
Ruin, Long Rigg Beck
This rather mysterious ruin is just below the confluence with Stranger Gill (visible beyond). It may be another sheepfold but this seems unlikely given the close proximity to SD6597 : Long Rigg Fold. Also, the end walls seem more substantial than a typical sheepfold incorporating some quite large blocks of stone which may even have been squared off. A cursory inspection suggested to me that the end walls may have been pointed in shape, perhaps to support a sloping roof although no signs of timber beams were seen. Was it a small barn or shepherd's shelter? If so, I cannot think of any similar examples in the Howgills.
