No Reward for Little Squirrel
No Reward for Little Squirrel
All change at the Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve. Trees have been cleared to the east of the hide (mainly pollarded), due to the need for maintenance work on the high voltage cables; done at the end of August, and every four years. Thinning did need to be done, and morning light has been improved considerably, but I guess that the squirrels will take a little while to adjust.

Good news, there has been a good nut crop this year. Bad news, all the squirrels were up the trees, harvesting the nuts. I did wonder what one squirrel thought, as I stood under a tree, shaking a bag of hazelnut kernels, calling "Hazelnut!" He/she was up a hazelnut tree, probably thinking the squirrel equivalent of "Bog off!", before climbed further up the tree.

Four and a half hours at the nature reserve, with a break for lunch, saw me take a magnificent TWO pictures, both of this young squirrel. From the class of 2013, I watched him working his way through the trees, eating the occasional nut as he went. Arriving at the tree beside the hide, I thought that my luck was in. Sadly, his mum does not appear to have told him that most nut-bearing humans are nice! I've never heard so much bad language from a squirrel; he went up and down the tree, several times, swearing as he went. Played peek-a-boo a few times (and continued his torrent of abuse). In hindsight, I should have put down the hazelnut, and tried to take more pictures, as he offered more (brief) opportunities than I normally get in a year.

Just as I thought he was calming down, an in-coming bird spooked him. He ran down the tree trunk, across the now open land, and climbed up a tree about thirty yards away. So, he missed out of a vast quantity of hazelnuts and walnuts.
