Quarry Pond, Hengistbury Head
Quarry Pond, Hengistbury Head
In the nineteenth century (1848 - 72), Hengistbury Head was exploited as a source of Ironstone from this quarry and the foreshore. This was in the form of large boulders or "doggers" and these were shipped from a quay on the sandbank below. This exploitation considerable weakened the headland with about a third being lost to the sea. To prevent further erosion and contamination of the salt marsh below, the quarry was dammed and the pond was formed.
