The Armstrong Cross and the Newcastle Hotel
The information board nearby says:
"The cross is formed from sandstone from Cragend quarry on the Cragside estate and stands 22 feet 7 inches high. The north, east and west sides of the shaft represent nature in all its forms and phases. The south side contains the endless Celtic knotwork pattern similar to the original Rothbury Cross which now forms the base of the font in the parish church.
The inscription reads, 'This monument was erected in the year 1902, on the site of the ancient market cross, by the inhabitants of Rothbury and other friends, in admiration and grateful remembrance of the long and useful lives of William George Baron Armstrong of Cragside, cb1810-1900, and of Margaret his wife 1807-1893.'"
