Christchurch: Saxon Square
The Square was created in the mid-1980s, after the town's current council offices were completed in the 1970s. This meant that the Town Hall (SZ1592 : Christchurch: the Town Hall) was surplus to the council's requirements, and the majority of it was demolished leaving the historic original part. The Celtic cross ahead of us (I'm not sure that it is genuine) marks the extent of the building before demolition.
The plaque facing us on the Town Hall states that the Square was opened by the town's mayor, Cllr. Kenneth W.L. Gibbs, on 28 September 1983.
As well as the square ahead of us, there is also a semi-covered parade of shops to our immediate right - see SZ1592 : Christchurch: parade of shops, Saxon Square.
