The movement of cattle in the United Kingdom is strictly controlled, every beast is tagged in both ears one tag is plastic the other can be smaller and metal. The numbers on the tags identify each individual animal, in the case of dairy cattle the tags must be fitted within 36 hours of birth and cannot be removed without the permission of The British Cattle Movement Service.
