Cannock Chase, The Messines Model
Cannock Chase, The Messines Model
This model of Messines Ridge in Belgium, was built by New Zealand troops encamped on this part of Cannock Chase, during the final years of the first World War. It was used as a training aid for soldiers heading for the battlefield. The site is being excavated to record and photograph before it is lost for ever. When it has all been recorded the site will be covered over with special sand and sheeting to preserve it, and the Heather will be allowed to grow back. There was a German prisoner of war camp nearby, and it is said that they helped to build it.
