Lanercost Priory, view across the cloister
The priory was dissolved in 1537, and the estate was acquired a few years later by Sir Thomas Dacre. While many of the buildings were demolished or allowed to decay, those seen opposite were adapted for living accommodation. On the left is Dacre Tower, converted from the former monastic kitchen and extended upwards. The glazed building to the right is Dacre Hall, which was lavishly decorated inside. The Howard family, later owners of the estate, donated Dacre Hall to the local community in 1952 and it is now a rather grand village hall

Lanercost Priory is well worth a visit even on a wet day - there are plenty of places to huddle. The ruins are in the care of English Heritage
