Grand Union Canal: Tiddenfoot Lake bridge & site of old swing bridge
The green footbridge is of modern construction and was formally opened for use in July 2009. It links the Tiddenfoot Lake Waterside Park out of sight on the left of the canal with the towpath on the right of the canal.
In the foreground the narrowing of the canal indicates the location of a former swing bridge that once enabled farmers to access a small area of fields between the canal and the River Ouzel on the right. The bridge is still shown on post-war Ordnance Survey maps, but lost its function when the agricultural land to the left of the canal was dug up as a sand quarry. Once it was worked out this quarry was flooded to create Tiddenfoot Lake.
The photographer has to confess to not knowing what number the old or new bridges were or are in the Grand Union Canal scheme... Bridge Number 115A is to the north and Bridge Number 115B is to the south of this reach...
