In areas where an Active Traffic Management (ATM) Scheme is in force, the hard shoulder may be used as a running lane. In such areas, Emergency Refuge Areas (ERA) have been created at frequent intervals along the hard shoulder into these areas for use in cases of emergency or breakdown. These Emergency Refuge Areas are equipped with emergency phones and CCTV cameras. In this example, the designation 6338B is clearly marked on the post and the emergency telephone; a stranded driver can use this to identify their location to the emergency telephone operator.

Even when the Active Traffic Management is not in force it is recommended that, in cases of breakdown or emergency, drivers should try to get their vehicle into an Emergency Refuge Area. This is safer than just stopping on the hard shoulder as it gives a greater distance from the main carriageway.

M42 Motorway

The M42 motorway is 55 miles long. The motorway runs north east from the M5 near Bromsgrove to the A42 near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, passing Redditch, Solihull, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and Tamworth on the way. It was started in 1976 and completed in 1989. It joins the M5, M6, M6 (Toll) and M40 together and bypasses Birmingham.
